my life
consumed by yesterday:
By 9:49 pm Ferrell's Donuts off Ocean Street, Santa Cruz, was brimming.
The locals would spend the last moments of their night to share stories
with my good friend Charlie the graveyard donut maker, the god damn
inventor of Double Nine. Some of them wagered bets in anticipation
of the new football season while others indulged their quarters to
a game of Street Fighter and Metal Slug. I caught up with Charlie
with a cup of coffee. By 10:39 I left Ferrell's for my next cup.

the smell:
friday
night was a blur between back alley bars
serving under age kool aid
and the chef of patina
dishing minimalist
french faire
for the price of 99 double quarter pounders with cheese
beneath frank ghery's architectural american splendor.
